When I was younger, Siksika Elders blessed me and gave me a Blackfoot name, “Linaaksoopaipii,” which translates to Little Jumper. Most people tend to follow the traditional path. I noticed that most of my peers walk in a straight line when navigating through life. The way I perceive myself is that instead of “walking,” I jump. I jump from pedestal to pedestal, trying to balance and seize every opportunity and chance. I’m on the same path, but I’m just getting there differently. For a long time, I thought it meant something was wrong with me, but I realized that it’s okay. I’m just a “jumper”.
As an indigenous woman from Zagime Anishinabek, I am thrilled to share my story of perseverance and determination with you. My name is Darrian Desjarlais, and I am 24 years old. I am currently a Media Production student, and my convocation will take place in Saskatoon at Saskatchewan Polytechnic this upcoming June. The Media Production program covers advanced production techniques and helps develop management skills related to media production environments. The program provides an education on, but not limited to, still imaging, formatting, manipulating and editing graphics, audio recording and production, electronic publishing, lighting techniques and design, presentation software and equipment, web authoring, multi-camera video production, project management and scheduling, portrait and product photography, streaming media, and motion graphics.
From the very beginning of my internship with Rocky Mountain Wedding Collective, I have felt welcomed into their warm and inviting community. The people within this team all possess a growth-driven mindset and are specialists in their respective fields. What has truly stood out to me is the way Lindsay, the founder of the company, has created a safe and supportive company culture. This culture has fostered an engaged team that brings positivity and passion to their work each day.
As a member of the Indigenous community, it is extremely important to me to dedicate myself to achieving academic excellence and advancing my professional career. The opportunities provided by Rocky Mountain Wedding Collective have continuously helped me to strive towards those goals, providing me with real-world practice and experience.
I am truly grateful for the opportunities and support that Rocky Mountain Wedding Collective has provided me during my internship. The warm and inclusive community has helped me to feel like a valued member of the team, and I look forward to continuing to grow both personally and professionally with this amazing organization.
